Okay...Nothing MoreMar 23, 2005 'Ouch' is the Ohio Players second Boardwalk album and it isn't a whole lot better then the first.Neither of the albums for that label were very well crafted, albeit pretty funky. But funk without form is just that-formless.It doesn't sound good to the ear when the rhythms are forced to hold themselfs in place in lieu of a decent song. And on most of 'Ouch' that's what happens-the Philly-type R&B of "I'd Better Have A Coffee Break" is a decent enough tune with the albums only real hook. But this was a 1982 release and finds the bands sound still stuck firmly in the 70's-these tunes often sound like outtakes from the 'Angel' album-"Do Your Thing" just plods with the same musical idea for over five minutes and goes nowhere. It doesn't commit as many musical miscues as the previous years album
'Tenderness' but nothing here COMPARES to even 1978's critically
panned 'Jass-A-Lay-Day'.I'd even go as far as recommending 1984's highly electro 'Graduation'-at least the album is tighter and the songwriter is existant!None of that can be said for this sadly enough.
