2Great selection and player, but a bad recordingSep 05, 2002

It so happens that my dad had this very album in his vinyl LP collection. It was originally released on the Audio Fidelity record label, way back in 1961, and I was hoping to replace it with a CD, because I liked the selection of songs, and I think Leon Berry is clearly a very skilled player. However, in spite of the fact that it was originally supposed to be state-of-the-art HiFi in its day, I am here to report that even the original 1961 LP release sounded very distorted and tinny, and the CD does not sound one bit better. In fact, if anything, the CD is worse--the LP at least had crisper highs and better stereo seperation than the CD. I suspect the original master recording must have been bad, too, and that it would be very difficult to make it sound too much better. Therefore, I am giving this a 2 overall--5 for the selection and the player's skill, and a 1 for the recording quality, which makes the album very difficult to enjoy fully.

1It could have been betterSep 28, 2001
By Joel Shapiro
Having heard Leon Berry perform on the HUB Roller Rink organ many times, I was very disappointed in both the quality of the recording and the recorded sound of the organ. It sounds like one of the small Wuritzer organs used in neighborhood theaters during the organ heyday but the recording is poorly engineered, making the organ sounds highly distorted and tinny. If this is a re-release of these earlier recordings, I don't think any remixing or enhancement of the source material was used to improve the sound.

I think they could have made an attempt to produce a better recording and I'm sure many organ "Purists" would even agree.

3The Beast in the BasementNov 12, 2010

This particular recording was made on the organ that Leon Berry had in the basement of his house. The title on the album is miss-leading. This was not recorded at the Hub Roller Rink. At the time of this recording the organ had only four ranks of pipes. It is what it is. A recording made on a small organ in a small room. Enjoy it for what it is.
